June 9, 2021 Meeting: COLA Updates

The change in the Consumer Price Index-All Urban Consumers, Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-WVA (CPI-U) from May 2020 to May 2021 is 3.797%. This is the largest year-over-year increase since 2011.

In accordance with County Code Sec 33-44, the percentage of the COLA that you will receive is dependent on many factors including: your retirement group; when you began participation in the retirement system; the date you retired; if you had County service after 2011; if you are receiving disability benefits; and, if you are receiving a termed vested benefit. There are different tests to apply the COLA as some individuals receiving retirement benefits have a cap on the COLA that can be applied depending on the factors noted above, including if you had County service after 2011, that portion of your benefit is capped at a 2.5% of the COLA. The COLA for other individuals in capped at 3% and then 60% of the amount over 3%.

The Montgomery County Employee Retirement Plans (MCERP) will be sending a notice to each person receiving an annuity benefit outlining the change in their benefit amount. Please be patient and wait for your individual letter announcing your COLA amount.
